College
For my mid-life crisis, I decided to pursue a college education and, after acquiring my Associate's degree from Everett Community College and receiving the outstanding graduate award from the English Department, I attended Fairhaven College at Western Washington University in Bellingham and received my BA in 2003.
In Bellingham, I discovered what a small world we live in--Fairhaven's dean (Ron Riggins) is the father-in-law of Bret Boone (Seattle Mariners), the son of Bob Boone (Crawford HS'68) and the nephew of Rod Boone (Crawford HS'69).
At Fairhaven College, students design Concentrations (majors)and combine several interests into their course of studies. I had a special (personal) interest in the long term effects of child abuse on the development of the adult psyche, so I studied Psychology, along with the study of Literature and...Expand for more
Creative Writing (both used as a means to promote psychological "healing").
Fairhaven College, one of the seven colleges associated with Western Washington University, is a body of 400-500 students who approach learning within a tight-knit, diverse community. There are no grades (although classes taken at Western's main campus are graded). All students are given written evaluations from their professors, as well as being required to write self-evaluations, and course and professor evaluations.
All in all, college was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. Perhaps my life would have been much different if I had had the opportunity to go to college right out of high school, but I know that it is never too late to obtain a college degree, and I think that I may have appreciated the experience more at this age than at the age of 18.
